A rare and characterful Early Victorian Silver arrow jabot brooch with an orb dangle, finely dated by full Exeter hallmarks to 1847. The arrow motif is beautifully defined with a sculptural head and bold fletched tail, from which a spherical Silver orb is suspended on a delicate chain for graceful movement.

Struck with very scarce Exeter assay marks on both sides of the jabot pin, this piece carries the full suite of hallmarks and a compelling period engraving reading “COMBMARTIN SILVER REG OCTR 21 1847 HS ELLIS EXETER”, firmly placing it in time and place. An exceptional 19th-century jewel that wears elegantly on a lapel, cravat or scarf, and a superb addition for collectors of provincial English Silver.

MEASUREMENTS: Arrow is 114.5mm long.
Arrow head is 26.5mm long x 17.5mm wide.
Arrow tail is 28mm long x 40mm wide.
Orb is 30mm in diameter.
WEIGHT: 16g.

MATERIALS: Tests as Sterling Silver.

HALLMARKS: HE Maker’s Mark, Duty mark of Queen Victoria, Lion Passant, Exeter Castle (Exeter Assay), Date letter L for 1847. Hallmarked on both sides of the jabot pin.

EXCELLENT: Silver surfaces show only light wear commensurate with age, retaining crisp detail to the arrow and orb. Hallmarks are clear and legible, and the fittings are secure. No evidence of repair.
