18th Century English Georgian Amethyst Diamond Ring c 1784 – Ralph Bigland, Garter Principal King of Arms

Sold

Crafted from the 18ct Gold, this exceptional English Georgian ring, dated to 1784, carries with it beauty, exquisite craftsmanship and a fascinating historical connection!

The reverse is engraved: “ob 27 March 1784 at 73. GPH of Arms” and bears a tiny glazed panel, a typical feature of high-status Georgian mourning jewellery. The inscription refers to Ralph Bigland, Garter Principal King of Arms, the most senior herald at the College of Arms in London, who served from 1780 until his death in 1784. As Garter King of Arms, Bigland was responsible for state ceremonial occasions and the granting of coats of arms, making this ring a piece of national heritage as well as a personal memorial.

The face is set with a richly coloured 12.5 x 10.5mm faceted Amethyst of approximately 1.8cts, surrounded by a halo of 22 glittering old mine cut Diamonds totalling around 0.35cts. Crafted in the late 18th century with remarkable care, it remains pristine — a wearable piece of Georgian history.
